Standards of BMI and BMR

Body Mass Index (BMI) Standards

BMI (Body
Mass Index) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. It is commonly
used to classify individuals into weight categories that may indicate health
risks. (For Detail: WHO)

BMI Categories:

BMI Range

Category

Below
18.5

Underweight

18.5 –
24.9

Normal weight

25 – 29.9

Overweight

30 – 34.9

Obesity (Class 1)

35 – 39.9

Obesity
(Class 2)

40 and
above

Extreme Obesity (Class 3)

A BMI below
18.5 suggests a risk of malnutrition, while a BMI above 25 may indicate an
increased risk of lifestyle diseases like diabetes and hypertension. However,
BMI does not differentiate between fat and muscle mass, making it less accurate
for athletes or muscular individuals.

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) Standards

BMR (Basal
Metabolic Rate) is the number of calories your body needs to perform basic
functions such as breathing, circulation, and cell production while at rest. It
varies based on age, gender, weight, and muscle mass.

Average BMR Estimates:

Category

Average BMR (kcal/day)

Men

1,600 –
2,000 kcal/day

Women

1,200 – 1,500 kcal/day

A higher
BMR means the body burns more calories at rest, which is influenced by muscle
mass and metabolic health. Regular exercise, especially strength training, can
increase BMR over time.

BMR is
essential for determining daily calorie needs. By multiplying BMR by an
activity factor (sedentary to very active), one can estimate Total Daily Energy
Expenditure (TDEE), which helps in setting weight management goals.
